I want to talk about Shaun Tha Hype. I have seen him perform for the first time in Montreal in 2005 at Club Soda. It was a live hip hop concert, and I was so moved by his rap, lyrics and song lyrics that evening that I couldn't stop listening to him afterwards. I have since seen him perform four other times in New York City at five different venues. My favorite is "The Knitting Factory" on Broadway in Brooklyn Heights if he's appearing there again. In the summer of 2007, I arranged for him to have an interview partly in person and partly via webcam from Beijing from where he was in a tour of Asia. He gave a 5-minute mini concert in front of a few hundred people at Peking University, the biggest audience he has ever played for, and this beatbox performance was originally going to be part of his broadcast. The interview was done via Skype from my apartment in Beijing. And it turned out to be a very memorable one. I have a 2-minute video clip of it here. Shaun Tha Hype is a hip hop artist from Toronto, Canada, who has been in the music business for more than 15 years. He is a very versatile rapper who blends English and Cantonese into his lyrics that are from his real life experiences with his own observations of the world. He also sings in the show and writes poems and songs. Shaun Tha Hype truly represents the Canadian culture, and he makes people proud of their nationality and identity as Canadians by telling stories about our country's rich history. For example, see "Rising of The East", which he performed at The Knitting Factory NYC on July 27th 2009 (video #1 below). His show mixes beats and other music from around the world, including Chinese. In fact, he creates a new genre by blending hip hop with drum and bass trips, as well as playing other instruments on stage such as the flute or his keyboard. He is a singer as well as a lyricist and composer. He has been singing since before he started rapping, performing at school concerts, universities and shows ever since he was a teenager. He also has a strong voice that can hit high notes authentically authentically sound like a vocalist from Taiwan or Hong Kong. I have seen him perform live 50 to 60 times in NYC alone. His fervent fans in the US and Canada come to his shows as well as many fervent fans from Taiwan, China and even Hong Kong. At one show in Beijing, the crowd was so large that he had not only about 200 fans from those places but also those from Canada and those who were there for other reasons (like me) and by chance became interested and joined the crowd. His lyrics are all taken directly from his life: experiences with friends and love, day-to-day activities, listening to music – he portrays them all. eccc085e13
